About Japan Post

Japan Post is Japan’s national postal service. It delivers mail and parcels in Japan and sends international items through the postal network.

Japan Post’s tracking covers Registered Mail, Yu-Pack, Yu-Mail, Letter Pack, EMS, International Parcel and insured items, but ordinary letters and postcards can’t be traced. Its English page lets you search up to 100 items at once, and Japan Post notes that it can’t show updated information during a system or communication problem. For items coming into Japan, “Transported in bond” and “Arrived in bond” mean customs clearance is still in progress until “Dispatched from the international exchange office” appears.

Kargo Radar checks Japan Post’s English tracking service. For international items, it often includes events from the destination country, such as arrival at the inward office of exchange and final delivery. Japan Post keeps tracking history for about 100 days for domestic items and about 12 months for international mail.

What do Japan Post tracking numbers look like?

You’ll find the tracking number on the label, the shipping receipt or the shipping details the sender gave you. The examples below only show the format.

International number (UPU S10)

Example format

EE123456789JP

Two letters, nine digits and JP. EMS items start with E, registered mail with R, parcels with C and tracked small packets with L.

Domestic tracking number

Example format

123456789012

An 11- or 12-digit number made up of digits only, used for domestic items such as Yu-Pack.

Numbers that start with U are used for small packets containing goods without customer tracking, so Japan Post may show no events for them.

Is the carrier detected automatically?

International numbers ending in JP are recognized automatically and looked up with Japan Post; in the app they’re saved as “International Post.” Domestic numbers look like other carriers’ numbers, so choose Japan Post for those; the form on this page already has it selected.

How to track Japan Post packages with Kargo Radar

See where your package is in a few steps, and hear about it when the status changes.

  1. 01

    Enter the number

Paste your tracking number into the form on this page. The form already has Japan Post selected and takes you straight to the results.

  2. 02

    Pick the carrier if needed

Some Japan Post numbers are recognized from their format. For the rest, choose Japan Post from the carrier list in the app or on the tracking page.

  3. 03

    Follow every event

Each scan is listed on a timeline with its date (and time, when the carrier provides one), and the overall status is summarized as one of six standard statuses.

  4. 04

    Get notified

Save the package to your list in the Kargo Radar app and you’ll get a notification on your phone when its status changes. Packages from other carriers sit in the same list.

What do the tracking statuses mean?

Kargo Radar turns each carrier’s own status wording into six standard statuses, so packages from different carriers read the same way. Each event keeps the carrier’s own description in the history, or an English rendering for carriers that only report in their local language.

Shipped
The carrier has registered the shipment or picked it up from the sender. It may not have left yet.
In transit
The package is moving between facilities, countries or customs.
Out for delivery
The package is out for delivery, or it’s waiting to be collected at a branch, post office or pickup point.
Delivered
The package was handed to the recipient or collected from the pickup point.
Delivery failed
A delivery was attempted but not completed. The carrier’s next step shows up in the event history.
Returned
The package is on its way back to the sender, or it has already been returned.

Japan Post customer support

For something you sent abroad that hasn’t arrived, fill in the Inquiry Request Form at the post office where you mailed it. Japan Post says it can’t take the request by phone, and the reply can take more than a month. Claims for damaged or missing EMS contents also go through the post office.

If you’re waiting for EMS from overseas, Japan Post has an inquiry form, but its tracking stays empty until the item reaches Japan. Kargo Radar can’t lodge an inquiry with any post office, as it only reads the tracking record.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Japan Post packages.

How do I track a Japan Post package?

Paste your tracking number into the form on this page. Kargo Radar looks it up with Japan Post and lists each event with its date, place and time.

Has my package from Japan arrived in my country?

Look for events such as arrival at the inward office of exchange or customs in the Japan Post record. Once those appear, the item has reached the destination country and the local postal service is handling it.

Why does Japan Post say my item was not found?

A newly posted item can take a little while to show its first scan. Japan Post also keeps tracking history only for about 100 days for domestic items and about 12 months for international mail, so older numbers can’t be found.

How long does Japan Post keep a parcel from abroad if I’m not home?

Japan Post says parcels from overseas that couldn’t be delivered because no one was home are kept at the delivering post office for 15 days, and items subject to customs duties for one month. You can ask for redelivery or collect the item at the post office.

Why does my EMS item show as delivered when it’s at a post office?

Japan Post says that for EMS items sent to France or the U.K., the record can show “Received by the addressee” or “Delivered to the Recipient Address” even when the item was taken to a nearby post office because no one was home. For Germany, items held by customs agents or passed to another delivery company can show as delivered or returned.

Is Japan Post tracking free?

Yes. Tracking on Kargo Radar is free and doesn’t require an account. Save the package in the app to get a notification when its status changes.
